Lyric video, music video or visualizer?
Three kinds of video usually go with a song. They differ in what is on screen and in how much they cost to make.
Last updated:
Lyric video
The words of the song are on screen, timed to the singing. The viewer can read and sing along. It needs only the song and the lyrics.
Music video
A story or performance, usually with people, locations and a camera. It is the most work and the most cost.
Audio visualizer
Moving shapes or a waveform that react to the sound. There are no words, so the viewer cannot read the song.
Which one fits
- Lyrics matter and you want people to remember them: a lyric video.
- You have a story to film and the means: a music video.
- An instrumental or a quick teaser: a visualizer.

Questions
Is a lyric video enough to release a song?
Many songwriters put out a lyric video first, because it needs only the song and the words.
Does a lyric video have people in it?
Not necessarily. The words and the drawings carry the video.
